Solent Tool Repairs

Here at Solent Tools we carry out repairs and services on power tools and garden machinery. We are based in Southampton (Millbrook) and we fix, mend, repair and service DIY & professional / trade tools and equipment.

How much are Repairs and Services?

It is impossible to give a price for a repair, there can be many factors that can determine what needs to be and how long it will take.

We have a Booking in fee for repairs:

MOWER BLADE SHARPENING £6

ELECTRIC TOOLS £12-24 (depending on the potential size of the repair)

PETROL LAWNMOWERS £36

DISC CUTTER £36

OTHER PETROL MACHINES £36

GENERATOR £60

This is the minimum charge for inspection of the machine and quoting for the repair.

If we are able to repair the machine, this amount will be taken off the final bill.

If your repair is going to cost over double the amount of the booking in fee, we will contact you before completing the work or ordering parts. If the cost of the repair is less than that, we will carry out the repair and contact you as soon as possible.

Is there anything you Cannot Repair?

We can repair most brands of power tool and garden machinery. If you are unsure or you have a specialist piece of equipment, please contact us to check before bringing it in.

Items we do not repair include:

  • We do not do any repairs under Warranty – we are not a warranty agent for any brand, make or manufacturer.
  • Anything you can ride on or bigger (Including Ride On Lawnmowers)
  • Paslode Nail Guns – We would recommend using Handi Hire in Totton for these repairs (Click Here to be redirected to their website)
  • Batteries

How long will Repairs / Services take?

At quite times repairs take approximately 1-2 weeks. During busier seasons they normally take around 3-4 weeks.

It really depends on how many repairs we have in the queue and how long they will take. If we need to order parts in then we are at the mercy of manufacturer delivery times.

We will always try and give a rough estimate when you book a repair in or you can call us and we will give the current wait times.

Are Power Tools worth Repairing?

It really depends on the fault / part required. If you call or email us with the machine you have and the fault(s) it has we can usually determine if it is worth spending the money for it to be looked at.

For example a drill that needs new carbon brushes or that has a broken power cable is definitely worth repairing (usually around £24). But if the motor has burn’t out then it depends on the price and availability of the part as some manufacturers price them at around 70% of the cost of the machine (we would contact you with a price of the part & fitting to let you decide).

Generally speaking it is considered that a repair cost of up to around 50% of the value of a machine is worth doing. With that in mind a machine that cost £40 or less is probably not worth repairing.

How often should you Service Power Tools?

A lot of problems occur when dirt, dust or residue coats the tool inside and out. Keeping your machine clean and using sharp blades on any tool that cuts is by far the best thing you can do for your machine. Ideally you would do this after every use, but in practice you would do this when you can see a build up.

There is not a lot to service on a 2 Stroke Petrol engine, we would recommend doing the following about once a month (depending on use):
  • Take the spark plug out, clean it and put it back. You may wish to buy a replacement ready for when it fails.
  • Take out and clean the air filter. If you have a foam filter you should wash it out with hot soapy water, let it dry, very lightly coat it with some clean oil (this will help catch any dust) and then replace the foam into the air filter.
  • Make sure you start it at least once a month. Dirt in the fuel is the biggest problem and using fuel that has been stored for 3 months and over is likely to result in blockages and a full clean out. Using a fuel additive is the best solution (Click here to order some, it can be used in all 2 stroke engines).
There is not a lot to service on a 4 Stroke Petrol engine, we would recommend doing the following about once a month (depending on use):
  • Check the Oil level and top it up if needed. A full oil change should be done either once a year or after around 100 hours of use.
Electric power tools (in general) have very few serviceable parts, you may wish to have a spare pair of carbon brushes ready for when the current ones run out. Batteries cannot be serviced but you can increase their lifespan by:
  • Charging them after they have been used (remove them from the charger within a few hours of them being charged)
  • Not leaving the battery in the machine when storing it.
  • Storing the battery at room tempurature (not in an unheated shed or garage).

What is the Lifespan of a Power Tools?

It all depends on build quality, the load the tool is under, the frequency of its use and how it is stored.

On average most DIY quality power tools will last around 5-10 years with light use. Lithium batteries will (on average) last around 4-7 years.
