If you are looking for a carbon brush set for an AC or DC motor then look no further as Solent Tools. We stock a large range of brushes for AC motors (800+ types) and a smaller range for DC motors. We also manufacture bespoke carbon brushes of any quantity.
A carbon brush facilitates the transmission of electrical current from a stationary to a rotating component in a motor or generator by serving as a sliding contact. There is normally 2 or 4 mounted on opposite sides of the motor.
You will need the model number of your tool, simply type it into the search bar at the top of the page and the brushes should come up. At Solent Tools we strive to know every model and the brushes that it takes.
If your model does not appear on the search then you will either need a micrometer or vernier to measure one of your brushes (email us with an image of the brush and include the dimensions on an email) or you can post us one of your brushes and we can find a replacement pair this way for you.
Approximate Cost: £10-15 per pair inc Vat & Delivery (this is for the majority of our range but some can be more & larger quantity orders can be less).

You will need to post us an original brush and if possible estimate the length that it needs to be (or measure from the top of the brush holder to the commutator). The grade of a DC brush has to be correct and there are so many different types, grades, compounds and resistances. If it is incorrect it can either allow too much or not enough current to the motor and that will destroy the DC motor.
We are able to to manufacture bespoke brushes with special high copper or high silver compounds and we are also regularly making bespoke DC brushes for a wide range of golf buggies, dynamos, mobility scooters, car heaters, starter motors and bow thrusters. Brands including: Maxpower Bow Thruster, BCS Bow Thruster, Lewmar Bow Thruster, Nobels Bow Thruster, Aquafax Bow Thruster, Vetus Bow Thruster, RMC Bow Thruster, Sleipner Bow Thruster and Quick Bow Thruster.
Approximate Cost: Because there are so many different grades it can be anything. We will always quote first with no obligation to buy and we can post samples back to you.
The motor will be intermittent cutting in and out. If the motor has stopped completely, you may find that shaking or gently hitting the tool will cause it to start again very briefly. This is because a worn brush is breaking and completing the circuit.
When you take the brushes out at least one will be under 5mm in length and they will have a smooth ( shape on the side of the carbon that touches the commutator.
The motor was smoking last time it was being used (most likely a fault with the motor).
Both brushes are over 5mm in length (not the brushes as they will be long enough to complete the circuit)
Either brush is chipped on the side of the carbon that touches the commutator or the carbon is cracked (most likely a raised segment on the commutator)
The motor runs slowly or fluctuates in power (this can be caused by worn brushes but most likely to be a speed controller or the motor itself)
It really depends on the quality of motor, the quality of the brushes and the load that the motor is under. It is always best to look at the facts from above, if the brushes are in a DIY power tool and it is in its first 3 years of life (with regular use) it is extremely unlikely to be the brushes that are the underlying fault.
This is largely due to electrical overloading which in turn forces the motor to generate excessive heat. This in turn starts to melt the insulation around the windings which is normally what the smoke is) until the windings fuse together and create a short.
This can also happen when there is not enough current getting to the motor.
No. If you can remove the brush from the holders without breaking them and they are over 5mm in length then a gentle rub on a file or sand paper should mean the brushes move freely when they are put back in the holder.
No, if it is an induction motor then it will have a capacitor rather than brushes and there are also ‘brushless’ motors that are starting to be used in the latest power tools (it will normally state this on the outside of the tool).
