How Do I Know How Long A Chain I Need On My Chainsaw?

Many people assume that the cutting length of the guide bar is the length of the chain, but this is not the case. Chainsaw Chains are measured by the number of drive links, these are the links that are on the inside of the chain that sit in the guide bar and sprocket. You will need to remove the chain from the saw and count them.

What Is Chain Pitch And How Do I Know What Pitch My Chain Is?

Some manufactures include this information in the product manual, If you have an Oregon chain it will have the chain type stamped into the drive link and this will determine the pitch and gauge. To measure the pitch you will need to measure from the center of 1 pin to the center of the same pin on the next link (see below). The most common pitches are 3/8″ (measures 19.2mm), .325″ (measures 16.7mm) & 1/4″ (measures 12.8mm).

How To Determine The Gauge Of A Chainsaw Chain?

You can determine the Gauge of a chainsaw chain by measuring the thickness of the drive link. The most common are .043″ (1.1mm), .050″ (1.3mm), .058″ (1.5mm) & .063″ (1.6mm). Some manufactures include this information in the product manual, If you have an Oregon chain it will have the chain type stamped into the drive link and this will determine the gauge and the pitch.

What Is A Chainsaw?

A chainsaw is a powerful cutting tool that cuts wood by spinning a sharp chain very fast around a guide bar. They are commonly used in forestry, landscaping, and construction for felling trees, pruning branches, and cutting lumber.

Chainsaws are available in various sizes, some are so small that they are mounted to the end of a long pole referred to as a pole saw or long reach chainsaw. They can be powered by petrol, mains electricity or a battery.
